Rob Marshall “brought back” movie musicals with his adaptation of Chicago in 2002. The film balanced the drab, grubby reality of 1920s Chicago with fantasies of Jazz Age razzle dazzle and showbiz. The clues to the audience that we were inside Roxy’s head, were lighting and color shifts to broadway pink and magenta with rhinestones a plenty.
