Best known for The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (pictured above), Jacques Demy explored the classic American film musical through a French aesthetic lens uniquely mod in style. Bold, striking colors complemented jaunty but modern music and classic jazz dance as seen in Golden Age Hollywood studio musicals.
Despite the musical polish, Demy’s films frequently had shades of melancholy. This purple to French blue thermal was inspired by the shadows behind the bright pinks and yellows.
